Florida, California lead Leapfrog's Top Hospitals list Print E-mail

The Leapfrog Group released its 2018 Top Hospitals list Tuesday, with Florida's 18 awardees bumping last year's list leader California into second place with 17 top hospitals. Texas and New Jersey also had strong showings, with 13 and 12 top hospitals, respectively.
Given its large population, one would expect Florida to be near the top of the rankings. That said, the #1 ranking is impressive. Why? According to data compiled by the American Hospital Directory (updated Summer 2018), Florida has 216 hospitals and 55,429 staffed beds. Meanwhile, California has 343 hospitals and 74,762 staffed beds. Texas has 367 hospitals with 59,329 staffed beds.

Greystone Names Donna-Lee Fabian Executive Director of new Kendall Lakes Health and Rehabilitation Center Print E-mail

Greystone Healthcare Management, an industry-leading healthcare management company, has named Donna-Lee Fabian as Executive Director of the new Kendall Lakes Health and Rehabilitation Center, scheduled to open soon. The new facility, located at 5280 S.W. 157th Avenue in Miami is Greystone’s fourth health and rehabilitation center in South Florida and features an array of medical services as well as specialized orthopedic, cardiac and stroke rehabilitation programs.

Fabian has been working in the skilled nursing industry for the past 16 years, and in other aspects of nursing for 15 years before that. She most recently served as the Nursing Home Administrator for Greystone’s North Beach Rehabilitation Center, a 5-Star Facility.

“I look forward to providing our community with outstanding quality care in nursing and therapy services in the beautiful, unique and well-planned Kendall Lakes Health and Rehabilitation Center,” Fabian said. “For me, family is the center of my universe, and the staff, residents and their families are my family. I am honored to be a part of the excellent reputation that Greystone has earned over the years.”

As Executive Director, Fabian will oversee all operational aspects of the facility, from patient care to new hires to quality assurance.

“Donna-Lee will be an outstanding Executive Director for our newest facility in the Kendall Lakes location,” said Kimberly Pero, regional vice president, South Florida Region, Greystone Healthcare Management. “She has extensive experience that will be very valuable in the new position, and a passion for patient care that is rare and special. We look forward to her leadership and success.”

Fabian received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her RN degree from Foothills Hospital School of Nursing in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is on the Everest University Advisory Board, is a participating/consulting Administrator at the University of Florida Long Term Management Program and a member of the Florida Health Care Administration (FHCA).

My training allowed me to become a disease-care expert, not a health care specialist, family physician Eric Madrid reports in a Nov. 25, 2018 KevinMD post. The author regrets that he was taught little to nothing about nutrition and true disease prevention. Dr. Madrid goes on to cite a study that demonstrates a lack of nutritional education among the physician community.

Employer Liability vs. Workers’ Comp: Know The Difference? Print E-mail

Confusion can reign when it involves employers trying to determine if something falls under their workers’ compensation coverage or their employer liability coverage. The fact is, many employers/medical practices do not even carry employer liability insurance, otherwise known as EPLI. In Florida, any non-construction employer with four (4) or more employees is required by law to carry workers’ compensation insurance. There is no requirement for employers to carry EPLI.

Employer liability insurance is becoming ever more important for all businesses, since we have been seeing a rapid increase in complaints and claims in the world of medical practices in the past two years and with the recently formed #MeToo movement. This, combined with the rise of social media, has created the perfect storm for the increase in employer liability claims. The most prevalent claims currently being experienced are employer retaliation, sexual harassment, and discrimination.

The aforementioned issues and many others fall under employer liability and could be serious enough to lead to an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint or a lawsuit, or both. In 2017, almost 6,700 sexual harassment complaints resulted in a recovery of almost $46 million from employers to the EEOC, an increase of almost 15% from 2016, and the numbers keep growing. This does not include personal claims and lawsuits, which cost employers far more in defense and payments.

Conventional wisdom has always taught us that politics, religion, and sex are topics we should refrain from discussing at work. Given the current political atmosphere in this country, as well as other hot-button issues and the explosion of social media, employers should be mindful of these issues and would be well-advised to implement policies to prevent or reduce these problems. It may be time to update the employee handbook.

Workers’ compensation is fairly simple and straightforward, with the exception of allowing attorneys into the system that was set up to be “no-fault” and designed to compensate employees regardless of fault involving an injury on the job. Workers’ compensation pays for all reasonable medical bills, as well as lost time, with the goal of returning the injured employee back to work at the earliest opportunity.
